October 10, 2019 was an exciting day for The Stevens Family Farm. The beef cattle purchase was completed. Thank you to Divine Harvest Farms for such a nice herd raised the right way.
In this picture you see our newly purchased beef cattle. They are grass fed only. They will not be finished on grain. The pasture that they graze on is divided into paddocks either .25 or .5 acres in size depending on the grass quality. This will give them enough vegetation to meet their needs daily. Each day they will be moved to a new clean paddock of fresh grasses. The paddock they just left will begin a countdown of 4 days. On the 4th day the layer chickens are moved into the paddock and will serve as the manure spreader and as a natural insecticide if you will. The reason for the 4 day delay is to allow fly larva to establish which gives the chickens a nutritious meal and they spread the manure helping to fertilize the pasture in a natural way.
This is our egg mobile. It is built on the running gear of a hay wagon and is "mobile".
There are 30 slots in the nesting boxes for the chickens to lay their eggs. The eggs roll out from under them into a collection tray that has a cover on it to help keep the eggs clean.
As you can see the floor is slatted to allow waste products to fall away from them while they are roosting for the night. There is plenty of perches for them to roost upon as well. In the winter they will vacation in the hoop house that will be put up shortly. I will add photos once it is installed.
Our Salad Bar Beef is just that. They are raised in the pasture and feed on a variety of nutritious grasses and get no grain. They were not meant to eat grain. You will enjoy a great flavor with a nutritious balance higher in Omega 3 than the CAFO produced beef. They are raised much more humanely as well.
Naturally raised, free range chickens. They get to roam around on their own eating grasshoppers, crickets and other insects while they scratch around for other little bites of food including grass. There is feather netting to protect them from ground predators. Supplemented with non-GMO feed
How about some pastured pork? No antibiotics and no chemical de-wormer. Keeping them worm free is done naturally with Basic H soap, white oak charcoal, pumpkin seeds and herbs. No poison. They can be purchased as half, whole or you can purchase cuts directly from us.
The Stevens' Family Farm will continue to sell the free range pastured chicken eggs at $4.00/dozen which is down from $5/dozen for the time being. We hope that the supplemental feed costs stay down so we can continue this price. I want you all to know that this flock was purchased from the Divine Harvest Farms and that the supplemental feed they receive is the same exact feed they were being fed at the Divine Harvest Farms. Non-GMO purchased at the same Amish feed store. No sprays.
The big news here at The Stevens Family Farm is that the purchase of our Short Horn Milkers as our beef herd is now complete. The herd comes from Divine Harvest Farms which is the same farm that our layers and egg mobile came from. Both farms practice the same methods of raising the animals without the chemicals that are used in the commercial markets.
This is an exciting time for us and we hope you will enjoy the benefits.
You might want to ask why the pigs are in a prep paddock instead of in the pasture. Well when they are small we start them out in what I call the prep paddock. Here they will learn where their supplemented food comes from. That would be the hog feeder with the slapping doors. There is also a perimeter electric wire on the inside near the walls of the fence. This teaches them boundaries before they go out into the larger paddock so they learn not to wander off.
